PETER COOPER SCHOOL. Located at 17th and White STREETS (then 17th and Sycamore]], the Peter Cooper School was constructed in 1889 by the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

On March 4, 1924 the announcement was made by school officials that the school would be closed at the end of the school year. Although the building was being used, in addition being a school, as a type of neighborhood community center, the condition of the building was critical. Improper sanitation had been a major concern for over a year. The location of the building was also considered to be poor.
