SAINT MATTHEW LUTHERAN CHURCH. Church founded in 1907 and located in 1990 at 1780 White. With one hundred seventy charter members, Rev. J. Heinrich Luz, one of the instrumental people in bringing WARTBURG SEMINARY to Dubuque, organized the church as St. Matthew German Evangelical Lutheran Church. Meeting in a Methodist church at Jackson and 25th STREETS, the congregation grew so quickly that it constructed its own church three years later.

Following its 49th anniversary, St. Matthew and several other Lutheran churches in Dubuque founded the Martin Luther Home for the Aged. Located across the street from Wartburg Seminary, this institution later became LUTHER MANOR.

In 1958 the name of the church was shortened to its present form, and two years later it officially joined the American Lutheran Church. Discussions in 1962 with St. John and St. Mark Lutheran churches about a possible merger ended because of costs and differences in philosophy. An educational wing was added to the present building in 1966.
