John Burgart

Burgart, John. (Ionia, IA--- ). Educator. In 2008, Burgart announced that he would retire from his role as superintendent of the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT at the end of the academic year. Burgart began his career in education as an English teacher at Grundy Center (Iowa) High School from 1969 to 1977. He began with the district in 1978 when he was hired as a librarian at HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL. In 1986 he was the librarian and department head at JEFFERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL. From 1987 through 2000, Burgart served as the director of curriculum and instruction for the District. He was named Executive Director of education program for the District from 2000-2002 and interim superintendent in July 2002 following the retirement of Jane PETREK. He served as superintendent from January 2003 through his retirement in June 2009.

The years during which Burgart was superintendent saw unparalleled construction in the District. PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School, and George Washington Carver Elementary School were all constructed. Junior high schools became middle schools as sixth graders were moved out of elementary buildings into schools with seventh and eighth graders.
