LEWIS, Meriwether
LEWIS, Meriwether. (Albemarle County, VA, Aug. 18, 1774-Nashville, TN, Oct. 11, 1809). Explorer and public official, Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, served as governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory from 1807 to 1809. It was Lewis to whom Julien DUBUQUE wrote in 1808 pleading ill health and asking that a replacement agent to the Native Americans be found for him.
Lewis and his successor both encouraged Dubuque to keep Native Americans living in the MISSISSIPPI RIVER Valley friendly with the Americans and away from an alliance with the British. Lewis felt Dubuque had influence with both the SAUK AND FOX tribes.
