SHIVAREE. A shivaree is a North American term for a noisy celebration made to a newlywed couple by an assembled crowd of neighbors and friends. This term was used in Rodgers and Hammerstein's stage musical "Oklahoma!"

In Dubuque as elsewhere the activity often involved banging pots and pans until the bridal couple invited the neighbors in for cake or ice cream.
