DUBUQUE HISTORY TRAIL
DUBUQUE HISTORY TRAIL. In September, 2016 the announcement was made that Dubuque had received a $148.500 grant from the National Park Service. A portion of the grant money would be assigned to establishing the Dubuque History Trail, a "walk tour" of the downtown area that would include high-tech accessibility through downloadable iPod casts and cell phone messaging. Traditional aspects of the trail would include pedestrian way-finding and interpretation signs, a history trail map for dozens of sites, trolley tours, and a river taxi-tour boat connecting the NATIONAL MISSISSIPPI RIVER MUSEUM AND AQUARIUM and the MINES OF SPAIN. The grant application had been submitted in May by the City of Dubuque and the DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
The trail included Dubuque's three sites each named a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK, seven key interpretative sites, five historic districts, and more than fifty historic structures and sites. The pedestrian way-finding sign program was to include map kiosks at strategic points on the trail and directional trailblazer signs. The kiosks were to include an interpretation of the area, area attractions, and walking routes. These kiosks were to be constructed on public sidewalks downtown and at points in the PORT OF DUBUQUE.
The grant was made through the Park Service's Preserve America Grants which were available to Preserve America Communities of which Dubuque was the first city in Iowa so designated in 2004.
