PAPAL VISIT
PAPAL VISIT. Although Pope John Paul II did not visit Dubuque on his visit to Iowa on October 4, 1979, parishioners in the ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE along with thousands of interested Iowans eagerly looked forward to the visit.
A budget of $1.2 million was established to accommodate the estimated 200,000 to 250,000 people who would attend the pope's mass at Living History Farms near Des Moines. Special envelopes suggesting donations from $5.00 to $500.00 were distributed at masses. A variety of official commemorative gifts were available for different amounts of donations. These included a portrait etching of the pope by Des Moines artist Bill Fultz ($3,000 and over), a leather-bound edition of a 96-page book commemorating the visit ($2,000-$2,999), down to an official medallion ($100-$499).
