STEWART, Homer J.
HOMER, Homer J. (Dubuque, IA-- ). In August, 1960 Dr. Stewart, a graduate of DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, was the director of the office for program planning and evaluation of the National Aeronautical Space Agency (NASA). He was on a two-year leave of absence from the California Institute of Technology to which he would return in November. He had been working there on jet rocket programs since 1936. He would also return to his work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. At NASA he had the responsibility of combining various space plans one of which was the recently successful Echo I satellite
The agency was working in 1960 on the Mercury program which was designed to place a man into orbit and bring him back. He predicted in August that a man would be sent into space on a Redstone missile and returned to Earth sometime in 1961. (Note: This was the flight of John Glenn.)
