SIMONES, Joseph
SIMONES, Joseph. (Bonaduz, Graubuenden, Switzerland, Oct. 3, 1846--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 17, 1893). From 1872 to 1878, Simones was the proprietor of the JEFFERSON HOUSE. With his family, he returned to Switzerland for three and one-half years, but came back to Dubuque in 1881.
Within months of his return, the IOWA COFFIN COMPANY was organized, and Simones became its largest stockholder. In 1884, he established JOSEPH SIMONES & CO., a large store on the corner of Sixteenth and Clay STREETS which carried a full line of clothing, boots and shoes.
At the time of his death, he was the Secretary and General Manager of the Iowa Coffin Company. (1) He was also vice-president and a director of the CITIZENS' STATE BANK (THE), a director of the KEY CITY INSURANCE COMPANY, DUBUQUE PRESSED BRICK COMPANY, and the Elgin Silver Plate Company of Elgin, Illinois.
