KRETSCHMER, Charles G.
KRETSCHMER, Charles G. (Gloschkau, Germany, Jan. 22, 1822-Dubuque, IA, Dec. 9, 1897). Educator. Kretschmer is believed to hold the record for service in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. At his death, he had over fifty years of educational experience in America and Europe, fifty years within Dubuque, and thirty-nine years of continuous service in one school.
Principal of AUDUBON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in 1897, Kretschmer, at the age of seventy-five, looked forward to beginning his fortieth year of service. He was believed at the time to be the oldest educator in Iowa with over one thousand former students.
