WESSEL, Garlyn. (Colesburg, IA, Mar. 20, 1927--Dubuque, IA, July 11, 1982). Wessel came to Dubuque in 1965 as assistant superintendent of the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. He was appointed superintendent in 1966, replacing Max CLARK who served in the position for twenty years.

During Wessel's tenure, the district enrollment grew from an estimated eight thousand students to just over thirteen thousand. Construction in the District included the building of STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL, HOOVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, EISENHOWER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, and AUDUBON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Wessel was succeeded by Dr. Howard PIGG.
