Broell, John C. (Insbruck, Austria, Mar. 9, 1885--1909). Emigrating to the United States in 1896, Broell came to Dubuque where he worked as a frescoer for a Mr. Brielmeyer, a leading local church decorator, and then as an artist for the DUBUQUE ALTAR MANUFACTURING COMPANY.

He established his own business, DUBUQUE STATUARY AND ORNAMENTAL COMPANY, on May 5, 1909 and later formed a partnership with John Kohler. The company specialized in religious statuary of life and half-life size and also manufactured ornamental building pieces including mouldings and cornices. Their products were sold throughout the Midwest.
