WILKIE, William E.
WILKIE, William E. (Rev.) (St. Anthony (near Marshalltown), IA- ). Wilkie, the first director of the CENTER FOR DUBUQUE HISTORY at LORAS COLLEGE, held the position from 1979 to 1986. A priest of the ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE since 1954, Wilkie graduated from Loras (maxima cum laude) with his B.A. degree before pursuing graduate work at the Catholic University of America and the University of Cambridge. He received a PhD. (summa cum laude) from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Wilkie held fellowships in Italy; Zurich, Switzerland; Germany; and the University of Kansas. From 1972 to 1973 he was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge. In 1976 Wilkie was elected a Life Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
Wilkie was the author of Rome and the Tudors Before the Reformation, and contributed to Seed/Harvest, A History of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Dubuque on the Mississippi is considered a standard narrative history of Dubuque, Iowa. He has held membership on the board of the DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
