Decorative cresting found on Second Empire architecture

CRESTING. Cresting refers to decorative work, often wrought iron, found along the roofs of homes built using SECOND EMPIRE ARCHITECTURE.

An example in Dubuque may be found on the roof of the Hoffmann Mortuary. Cresting never reached the heights of artistic design shown in wrought iron fences.
