PAGE, John. (Sure, Germany, July 26, 1844--Dubuque, IA, April 14, 1920). Page received his education in Europe and he lived there until 1870 when his father, sister and he came to the United States. (1) In 1873 Page began working for the CATHOLIC PRINTING COMPANY. He worked there three years and then was involved in operating a restaurant and saloon for some time in Dubuque. (2)
He had the PAGE HOTEL constructed in 1883. The four-story brick building at the corner of Fourth and White STREETS was noted for offering steam heat and both gas and electric lighting. (3) The success of the Dubuque hotel led to other Page Hotels being constructed in Manchester, Iowa and then Kenosha, Wisconsin. (4)
John Page was elected alderman of the second ward in 1885 and again in 1891. He declined the offer to be nominated for mayor by both political parties. (5)
