ECONOFOODS
ECONOFOODS. Major grocery store on Dubuque's westside. Located at 3355 John F. Kennedy Circle, Econofoods was part of the Nash Finch Company. When Econofoods opened in March 1986 it was part of a cluster of supermarkets on Dubuque's West End including Eagle Country Market and Save U More. The store also provided Dubuque residents with their first full-service supermarket bank provided by AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK.
Econofoods faced stiff competition after 2003 with the growth of Hy-Vee and the development of the Walmart grocery operation. While food store sales grew 1.6% from 2005 to 2008, the market dropped significantly from 2007-2008. Eagles closed their store across Kennedy Road from Econofoods in 2005. The impact of Hy-Vee increased with the construction of their new store between Dubuque and Asbury. On December 1, 2009, Econofoods announced that it too would close.
