FUERSTE, F. Hunter
FUERSTE, Hunter. (Dubuque, IA- ). Ophthalmologist. A graduate of DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and the University of Iowa medical school, Fuerste played trombone for two years with Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians in the late 1970s. In 1977 he played with the band at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel on what was to be Lombardo's last nationwide New Year's Eve broadcast.
In June 1991, Fuerste was the musical director of "Show Boat" performed at the GRAND OPERA HOUSE, was president-elect of the DUBUQUE ARTS COUNCIL, and played trombone in two local bands. The "Dubuque Brass Quintet" performs “sell-out” Christmas concerts annually. He spent more than two years creating “Swing Out! The Big Band Show” which has performed sell-out concerts annually in Dubuque as well as being presented in other locations around the Midwest. In 2003 and 2005 he was honored to be featured at the Glenn Miller Festival in Clarinda, Iowa.
In 2000 Fuerste was president of the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology. In 2002 he became president of the Iowa Medical Society, received a distinguished service award from the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology, was inducted into the Great Theater of Fame, and received the FIRST CITIZEN AWARD.
