JACKELS, Michael. (Rapid City, SD, Apr. 13, 1954-- ). Jackels received a master's degree in theology from Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1981. He was ordained for the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1981.

From 1985 through 1989, Jackels studied in Rome. While there, he worked for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In 2005 Jackels was appointed the bishop of the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas. His service there included a cathedral renovation and an emphasis on unity. He was known for visits to every parish and enjoying ethnic festivals.

Pope Francis appointed Jackels Archbishop of Dubuque on April 8, 2013. He succeeded Archbishop Jerome G. HANUS.
