AVERY FOUNDATION
AVERYT FOUNDATION. The memory of a well-known Dubuque artist will carry on through a newly created foundation that helps cancer patients. The Avery Foundation honors Jim Avery, who died from cancer in 2015.
His was a name, which was almost synonymous with Dubuque's Historic Millwork District.
"If something broke or they couldn't figure something out, come to this building right her, find Jim," said Ron Avery, Jim’s brother.
Jim Avery's work is all over the Millwork District.
"Railings, benches, flower boxes," said Ron.
His metal work is located in high profile places throughout Dubuque.
Avery was a skilled welder and metal artist. Back in 2014, Avery learned cancer had taken over his body.
"Especially with the cancer and I found out how bad it was. I thought why not sell everything and do what I want for the rest of the time," said Avery in 2014.
And that's exactly what he did. He spend the rest of his time sharing his art, his skills and his time.
"Jim would stop what he was doing to help someone else,” said Avery.
His family is now working to continue Avery's legacy of helping out. They've launched the Avery Foundation, which raises money for cancer patients.
"To pay for bills they don't expect, such as if they have to travel, meals and gas," said Ron.
No one fights alone, they say. And there's Jim's spirit all around to remind us.
The Avery Foundation board of directors will officially launch the new foundation on September 9th with a celebration starting at 6 p.m. at the Convivium Urban Farmstead on Jackson Street.
