In the minds of many Dubuque residents, Maus Park brought back memories of the discovery of the body of Kenny Joe Johnson, a 14-year-old boy who had been missing two days in October, 1987. Despite continued efforts, the homicide in 2020 remained unsolved.
In 2003 restoration efforts for the area were being led by students from the CENTRAL ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL. Beginning in September Central students visited the site every day and plans were in place to continue the program through at least the end of the first academic quarter. The goal of the school was to have every Central student involved for at least a few hours. (1) Students earned credits in physical education for working in the park or in English for researching the history of the park and writing interpretive brochures about it. (2)
