ZUMHOF, George. (Hanover, Germany, Jan. 9, 1821--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 6, 1908). Zumhof came to Dubuque on April 24, 1847 and began a series of careers that started with a bakery at the corner of Fifth and Main.

Zumhof continued the bakery until 1853 when he built the MISSISSIPPI HOUSE on White Street between Fifth and Sixth STREETS. Between 1862 and 1881 his ventures including ice packing. In 1863 his SAUERKRAUT business allowed him to ship 254 barrels to New York markets. (1)
