YATE'S ISLAND
YATE'S ISLAND. Located opposite LAKE PEOSTA, the island, also called the Thomas Yates Island, was developed by the GERMANIA BAND in May 1876 into an entertainment center for the summer. (1) The steamer Dorchester with a barge capable of carrying 75 people was chartered to transport people on Sunday between the island and the foot of 7th Street with the round trip costing ten cents. Boat rides began at 8:00 a.m. and operated every half hour. (2)
On the island, visitors could purchase ice cream, soda water, sweets, fruit or a complete meal. (3) Free yawls were provided for the use of visitors wishing to sail or row on the lake or river. A grove of thick timber "formed a cooling shade under a tropical sun," buildings were being constructed to "shield visitors from the elements," and underbrush was removed. (4)
