JOHN MEHLHOP, SON, AND COMPANY. The business was established in 1853 by Mr. John Mehlhop who operated it alone until 1867, when the firm became Mehlhop & Murdock, changing in 1887 to John Mehlhop, Son, and Company to reflect the principals-- John and H. H. Mehlhop and W. L. Orrick.

The premises occupied by the firm included a ten-floor 43X113 foot building 43x113 in which was carried a large and diversified stock staple and fancy groceries, grocers' supplies, teas, and coffees. A specialty was M. S. &. C. Coffee, of which the firm was the sole proprietors. They were also agents for the Perfection Scale.

The company employed eighteen clerks and assistants and a staff of traveling salesmen representing the firm in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota, and the territory of Dakota.
