KAVANAUGH, Thomas. (Ireland--Unknown). Emigrating from Ireland, Kavanaugh settled in Dubuque and became a stone mason. Living in the area of Southern Avenue, he was also a sculptor and is reputed to have made a wooden sculpture reinforced with iron of Andrew Jackson on horseback. In 1875 this statue was lifted to the top of the SHOT TOWER where it remained for several years.
John J. KAVANAUGH, his son, became one of Dubuque's lesser known artists.
