DUBUQUE FOOD PANTRY. The Dubuque Food Pantry was established in 1987 and incorporated in Iowa as private company categorized under Community Development Groups. In 1994 it was located at 1598 Jackson. People were asked to donate non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, baby items and dish or laundry soap. Monetary contributions were also accepted.
In 2018 officials of the St. Vincent de Paul Voucher Center and the Food Pantry announced a new program. Formerly St. Vincent would give clients a bag of pre-selected canned goods and other non-perishable goods. The organization then gave vouchers to the clients to purchase items at nearby grocery stores. Analyzing the results, however, led to the realization that what was purchased was often not nutritious. To remedy the situation, a large cooler was obtained to provide the items needing refrigeration. (1)
On July 1, 2022 a 'soft opening' was given to the Pantry's new location at 1310 White Street. The former Brannon Monument building offered the needed space and the interior was handicapped accessible. While clients could still pick up a prepacked bag of groceries, clients in the new building could make their own choices with the help of a volunteer. In its previous location, Food Pantry clients had to line up on the street to pick up groceries and volunteers had to carry supplies upstairs. Board meetings took place on tables set between stock shelves.
The opening was a great success with the Pantry breaking its record for attendance in July and nearly for its attendance in August.
