ZUMHOF, George. (Hanover, Germany, Jan. 9, 1821--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 6, 1908). Zumhof came to Dubuque on April 24, 1847 and began a series of careers that started with a bakery at the corner of Fifth and Main and included selling ice.
Zumhof continued the bakery until 1853 when he built the MISSISSIPPI HOUSE on White Street between Fifth and Sixth STREETS. In 1863 his SAUERKRAUT business allowed him to ship 254 barrels to New York markets. (1) In 1873 he returned to the ice selling business in the firm of Zumhof, Jones & Co. with orders being left at a store he operated on Clay and 4th STREETS. (2)
