In [[WORLD WAR I]], Utiz was severely wounded on September 14, 1918 and received Purple Heart. Returning to Iowa, he attended Iowa State College and received vocational training. He served as Iowa Department Commander of the Disabled Veterans in 1934 and National committeeman of the Disabled Veterans representing Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. He was employed in the retail shoe business in Dubuque. (1)
