In July 1873, the company charged in an article on page one that lumber dealers in Dubuque had met on July 16, 1873 and agreed to prohibit selling to any person except a dealer who belonged to the "Combination." E. R. Lumbert & Company did not join the "Ring" and said it would sell to anyone. The company asked the public to continue to patronize independent company rather than those who wished to monopolize the business. (1)
