He entered the Pillsbury Flour Mills, serving a three and a half years' apprenticeship in the miller's trade, and then moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as a representative for the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania, remaining in that territory about a year.
He was transferred to Dubuque where he continued his connection with the company for about two and a half years. In 1903 he established the DUBUQUE ADVERTISING CO., with offices in the BANK AND INSURANCE BUILDING.
