MCCARTY, Frank K. (Dubuque, IA--Los Angeles, CA, Apr. 4, 1942). The son of George McCarthy who operated the [[MERCHANTS' HOTEL]] for many years, McCarthy joined the American Legion after returning to the United States from [[WORLD WAR I]] in 1919. He rose to the position of commander of the Eleventh Illinois District. When he was transferred to Chicago as an employee of the [[ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD]] he was one of the founders of the Illinois Central Legion Post and was elected its first commander.
