Cretzmeyer, an instructor of mathematics, served as Columbia Academy's athletic director and coach for thirty-two years. As the academy's football coach, he had two undefeated seasons in 1920 and 1937. His football teams won over 75 percent of their games during his tenure. Cretzmeyer joined the faculty upon graduating from St. Joseph's College, now Loras in 1909. He retired from his athletic duties but continued to teach for two years before his death.
