Hardie, the recipient of the 1988 [[FIRST CITIZEN AWARD]] of the [[TELEGRAPH HERALD]], compiled a distinguished list of service to the Dubuque community. He served as the first president of the Arboretum Association which he was instrumental in founding and held charter-member status in the [[CLARKE COLLEGE]] Development Council. A former board member of the [[DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE]], Hardie served on the boards of Albrecht Acres and the [[DUBUQUE ARTS COUNCIL]], director of the Five Flags Executive Committee and the Five Flags Executive Fund Committee, director of the [[DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY]], and was a project business consultant for [[JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT]]. In addition to the Telegraph Herald award, Hardie received the Distinguished Civic Service Award from the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, Boys' Club of America Bronze Keystone Award (1973, 1982), and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from LORAS COLLEGE (1974). He was inducted into the Outdoor Advertising Hall of Fame in 1995.
