The 1859-1860 through 1929 ''Dubuque City Directory'' gave the address as 645 Iowa.
 
The 1867 ''Dubuque City Directory'' gave no address for this business although it was listed as a blacksmith.
 
The 1875-1876 through 1929 ''Dubuque City Directory'' gave the address as 645 Iowa.

BUTT BROS. Established in 1852 by John Butt, Sr., the company was located at 645 Iowa Street. The firm manufactured wagons and a general stock of light-running vehicles.

When the company founder died in 1873, he was succeeded by his sons--John, Ernest, William and Helmuth Butt. They had a three-story brick building constructed at a cost of $3,500. The company had seven workmen earning a weekly payroll of $100. The annual income of the company in 1880 was $8,000.
