KNAPP-TAINTER LUMBER COMPANY. Predecessor of the KNAPP-STOUT LUMBER COMPANY. Founded in 1846 by W.M. Wilson and S.H. Knapp, the firm consisted of a single sash saw mill. The company daily produced five thousand feet of lumber.
In 1851 the firm hired a new salesman, Henry L. STOUT, who proved so successful that he was offered a partnership the second year. By 1854 the company bore the young salesman's name.
