He had served as the acting president upon the resignation of Pasquale di Pasquale on July I, 1987. Barta's inauguration was postponed until merger discussions with [[CLARKE COLLEGE]] were cancelled on April 30, 1988. Msgr. Barta previously served as a psychology professor and academic dean at Loras, the college from which he graduated in 1952 with a degree in classical studies. His master's and doctoral work were in the field of psychology.
