Zumhof came to Dubuque on April 24, 1847, and began a series of careers that started with a bakery at the corner of Fifth and Main. He continued this until 1853 when he built the Mississippi House on White Street between Fifth and Sixth [[STREETS]]. He entered into a variety of business ventures between 1862 and 1881 including [[ICE]] packing.

In 1863 his [[SAUERKRAUT]] business allowed him to ship 254 barrels to New York markets. (1) In 1873 he returned to the ice selling business in the firm of Zumhof, Jones & Co. with orders being left at a store he operated on Clay and 4th [[STREETS]]. (2)
