WILDE, George. (Yorkshire, England, May 14, 1821--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 20, 1876). Wilde came to the United States in 1829 and settled in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. In 1834 he came to Galena. He moved in 1835 to Mineral Point, Wisconsin and, in March 1836, to Dubuque.

In 1847, Wilde entered the smelting business and continued it until 1864. In 1850 he traveled to California but kept his smelting business in Dubuque. After his return, Wilde built a store on the corner of Main and Second [[STREETS]] and began a mercantile business with the firm of Coates and Wilde. He later was involved in the livery business. He was the first 1lderman elected in the Third Ward of the city.
