In 1980 the Dubuque Jaycee organization was the fiftieth largest of the eight thousand chapters in the United States. Jerry Fjelseth, then a janitor at STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL, signed up two hundred forty new members in 1980, more than any other Jaycee member in the United States. He was inducted into the U.S. Jaycees Hall of Fame in San Antonio, Texas.
