ABELN, Anthony P. (Steinfield, Germany, Nov. 2, 1866-Dubuque, IA, Oct. 12, 1935). Abeln came to Dubuque in 1884 and began a life-long career as an abstractor. On January 1, 1895, he became deputy county clerk under [[HAYES, James A.|James A. HAYES]].

Abeln served as a deputy in the offices of the county treasurer, district court clerk, and county recorder before opening his own abstract office in the 1890s. Known as the "Dean of Dubuque's Abstractors," Abeln was considered an expert on real estate laws and titles. The [[ABELN ABSTRACT AND TITLE COMPANY]] was still operating in Dubuque in 2010.
