He welcomed Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt to th city and presided over the community during the worst street car strike in Dubuque's history when state troopers and Pinkerton detectives were called to reestablish order.  He was also a director of the [[GERMAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK]], Dubuque National Bank, and president of Berg-Arduser Jewelry Company.


Berg moved to Dubuque in 1865 and was instrumental in organizing the firm of Palmer, Winall, Bottand Berg Printing Company. In the early 1900s, he purchased the interests of his partners and organized Berg and Briggs, one of the largest printing companies in Dubuque.
