Taylor retired after fourteen years at the [[JOHN DEERE DUBUQUE WORKS]] and twenty-three years with the State of Iowa Department of Workforce Development. In 2011 he was named the commander of American Legion Post 6 in the city. He became the first of the [[AFRICAN AMERICANS]] living in the city to hold the office in the 93-year history of the organization. As the commander, he attended as many military wakes, funerals and graveside services as possible. He also worked to be sure the needs of the service men and women were met and encouraged recruitment of younger members to the organization.
