Retired after fourteen years at the [[JOHN DEERE DUBUQUE WORKS]] and twenty-three years with the State of Iowa Department of Workforce Developmenthe was named in 2011 the commander of American Legion Post 6 in the city.  He became the first of the [[AFRICAN AMERICANS]] living in the city to hold the office in the 93-year history of organization.  As the commander, he attends as many military wakes, funerals and graveside services as possible.  He also works to be sure the meeds of the service men and women are met and encourages recruitment of younger members to the organization. During the summer of 2011 he also became an ordained Baptist minister.
