SEAL. City emblem. While it is believed the city seal was first used around 1847, the emblem was not officially adopted by the city council until March 22, 1869. The round figure has the words "The Seal of the City of Dubuque" around its outer edge. In the center are the words "La Petite Nuit," or Little Night.
