Keas took his mastery of the spitball, learned from Charles Gardner RADBOURNE while playing baseball in Dubuque, into the major leagues. In 1887 the St. Louis Browns signed him to play. Later in the year, Keas was traded to Kansas City. He played his first big league game on August 25, 1888 as a member of the Cleveland Blues.
In 1889 Keas was traded to Milwaukee. Near the end of that season a leg injury ended his baseball career. A painter by trade, Keas returned to Dubuque where he thrilled local crowds with expert ice-skating.
