He grew up in the community and went to work in the store of Jesse P. FARLEY as a clerk. Christman remained with him several years and in 1847 formed a partnership with Farley in the hardware trade.
Christman later went into business with Richard Waller in the firm of Christman, Waller & Co. That continued about ten years. Christman's brother, Augustus CHRISTMAN established their business in 1867. The following year, Jacob became associated with his brother, and they conducted the business of J. and A. Christman & Co. at 672 Main Street.
