Billiards. Originally an outdoor game played on the ground with balls and sticks, the game can be traced to the 14th century after it was brought indoors and made a favorite of royalty.  Of the many forms, pocket billiards, commonly known as "Pool" remains the most popular. Dubuque once boasted three "pool halls." They were located at The Q," Dubuque Recreation, and the Union Cigar Store.  In 1997, there were at least two leagues: the Midwest Independent Pool League (MIPL) and the East Dubuque Pool League (EDPL).  One of the most successful players from Dubuque was [[BYRNE, Robert|Robert BYRNE]].
