Iowa Soldiers and Sailors Monument refurbished in large measure by the Save Iowa's Civil War Monument Foundation founded by R. D. McDonald and Brad McGowan.

Not all contributions are as celebrated as they should be by society. In the late 1990s Robert McDonald and Brad McGowan, now of Kalona, Iowa, co-founded the Save Iowa's Civil War Monument Foundation to refurbish the Iowa Soldiers and Sailors Monument on the grounds of the Iowa Capitol. Robert was extremely proud of Andrew Young MCDONALD who fought in the celebrated First Iowa Infantry at the Battle of Wilson's Creek. McGowan was equally proud of his great, great-grandfather who fought with the Second Iowa Cavalry. (4) McDonald was "instrumental," according to McGowan in obtaining for the Foundation the 501c tax exempt status which enabled it to raise a large amount of the monies used for the project. Unfortunately their efforts were not recorded on the plaque attached to the monument in 1999. (5)
