NIGHTINGALE, George L. (Herefordshire, England-Dubuque, IA, May 29, 1859). [[MAYOR]]. Nightingale served as mayor of Dubuque from 1856 to 1857. A man who at nineteen had gone to sea to travel the world, Nightingale served as a local merchant, justice of the peace, attorney and member of the Iowa legislature.

About 1836 Nightingale came to the United States and settled in Dubuque. He became a merchant,  
justice of the peace, lawyer, and member of the legislature.  Nightingale served as mayor of Dubuque from 1856 to 1857.
