At the age of sixteen after the death of his parents, Altman moved to France where he remained until he immigrated to the United States in 1857 and came to Dubuque. Altman purchased the [[HARMONY HALL]], a hotel and one of Dubuque's most prominent buildings and renamed it the [[ALTMAN HOUSE]]. He remained in the hotel business until 1888 when he retired to be a contractor. He also served as an alderman for the Third Ward for three consecutive terms around 1878-1880. (2) | |||
He is remembered as founder of the ''[[LUXEMBURGER GAZETTE]]'' and ''Katholischer Westen.'' These he eventually sold to the Gonner Brothers. He was one of the organizers of the [[MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY]]. (3) | |||

At the age of sixteen after the death of his parents, Altman moved to France where he remained until he immigrated to the United States in 1857 and came to Dubuque.
