CLARKE, E. Lincoln. (Conway, Franklin Co., MA, Nov. 22, 1822--Dubuque,IA, Oct. 7, 1903).  Dr. Clarke, a new arrival to Dubuque in 1861, was possibly the first dentist in Iowa to use hypnosis, known then as mesmerism, to prepare a patient for minor surgery. A widely respected teacher, Clarke had students who would later become the presidents of dental societies in Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Clarke was also interested in farming and was the first to introduce Jersey cattle to this area.
