PLAISTER, Joseph D. (Banwell, England, Mar. 26, 1848--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 14, 1926). At the age of one, Plaister traveled with his parents to Dyersville. Beginning his career, he moved to Dubuque at the age of fourteen and entered the business of Smith & Plaister, insurance. He joined the firm of JOHN BELL AND COMPANY in 1871 and remained with its successor RIDER-WALLIS DRY GOODS COMPANY.
Plaister held many offices in St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church, later ST. LUKE'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. He was also honored as being the "father of the Y. M. C. A." Through his efforts, a group of young men in the Old Main Methodist Church, became the first class in that organization.
